Plans revealed for AUS$592m eco resort in Australia

by Aoife Dowling | 17 Dec 2012

Plans have been revealed for a AUS$592m (US$623.6m, £385m, 474m euro) eco tourism resort on Great Keppel Island, Queensland, Australia.

Australian-based Tower Holdings is behind the resort that would comprise a 250-room hotel, 750 eco-tourism villas and 300 eco-tourism apartments as well as a day spa.

Designed by London-based architects WATG, the project is divided into four sections; Fisherman's Beach Resort, Clam Bay Resort, marine services and environmental protection.

Fisherman's Beach Resort will house the Fisherman's Beach Resort Hotel, day spa as well as villas, apartments and an airstrip.

In the centre of the island the Clam Bay Resort will feature an 18-hole golf course designed by Greg Norman.

The Environmental Protection area will have 1,347 acres of rehabilitation, ongoing maintenance, management and protection of the environment.

Located in the northwest of the island, the Marine Services section will include a marina, ferry terminal, restaurants and shops, a research centre and resort-eco apartments.

The aim of the project is to create a leading environmentally friendly tourist destination. The project team is working with government authorities and conservation groups to protect the world heritage area.

The project's Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), which took more than two years to complete, has now been released by the Queensland government.

State government agencies will review the supplementary EIS and report to the Queensland Co-ordinator General, who will make the final decision on whether to approve the resort.
