New theatre to open in central London
St James Theatre is to become central London's first newly-built theatre complex for three decades when it opens on the site of the former Westminster Theatre in September.
The new facility, which has been designed by Foster Wilson Architects, is located on Palace Street, Victoria, and has been entirely funded through private sector investment.
A 312-seat auditorium, a brasserie and a bar will be included among the facilities, along with a 100-seat or 150-standing studio to cater for short-run/one-night comedy and live music.
Lambart and Browne has overseen the interior design and artist Mark Humphrey will create a staircase installation for the theatre, which will also boast multimedia broadcast facilities.
The venue's management team includes Robert Mackintosh as joint chief executive officer and creative director and David Gilmore as artistic director.
A spokesperson said: "St. James Theatre will be one of the most luxurious venues in which to enjoy ambitious, quality theatre programming.
"[The theatre] will be a vibrant addition to the London cultural scene offering an unusual location for conferences and special events, with the bar and brasserie open for all-day dining."
