NASL franchise Indy Eleven reveals stadium plans
North American Soccer League (NASL) franchise Indy Eleven has revealed detailed plans for a US$82m stadium in its home city of Indianapolis, Indiana, US.
Designed by Populous, the 18,500-capacity venue will be designed as a multi-use facility and is expected to host at least 50 events annually.
Indy Eleven will serve as the venue’s primary tenant, anchoring the stadium with at least 20 games per year.
In addition, a professional women’s team and other soccer and lacrosse events – potentially including US men’s and women’s national team games – would bring a further 20+ events to the stadium annually.
Indy Eleven currently plays its home games at the 12,100-seat Michael Carroll Stadium, which the club has deemed too small after selling out all of its games during the 2014 season – its first in the NASL. The club had the highest average attendance in the league.
Peter Wilt, president and general manager of Indy Eleven, said: “By leading the league in attendance last year, our growing fan base built Indy Eleven into a team that all of Indiana can root for.”
The club hopes to secure a location for the stadium later this year and to have the facility open for the 2017 season.
• The NASL is a professional league with 11 teams — nine in the US and two in Canada. It's sanctioned as the Division II league in the American league system, under Major League Soccer (MLS) and above USL Pro.
