June opening for £74m Glasgow museum

Glasgow Life has announced that the new £74m Riverside Museum, which will be home to the city's transport and technology collections, is to officially open on 21 June.

The new Zaha Hadid-designed attraction is to be launched by Glasgow City Council (GCC) leader Gordon Matheson and will house around 3,000 exhibits across 150 displays. GCC has invested nearly £51m in the development of the new Riverside Museum, which is the first purpose-built transport attraction in the city.

It will provide the Museum of Transport's third home since opening in the 1960s and is the first new-build attraction since The Burrell Collection was unveiled in 1983. BAM Construction started work on site in 2007, with interiors and theming company Mivan appointed to deliver the fit-out of the new attraction.

The Heritage Lottery Fund awarded more than £18m towards the project, with the remaining balance funded through a fundraising campaign that has raised £4.1m out of its £5m target. Matheson said: "Glasgow's position as Scotland's cultural powerhouse can only be enhanced by the opening of the Riverside Museum.

"Zaha Hadid's breathtaking design has already been transformed into an iconic building that will bring visitors to the city from all over the world." Colin McLean, head of the HLF in Scotland, added: "This new home for a much-loved transport museum in a building of world-class design surpasses all expectations."
