Hospes and Malmaison pick up design awards
The winners of the annual European Hotel Design Awards have been announced at a ceremony in London.
Malmaison Aberdeen received the Architecture of the Year award for a restoration project, while the Andel's Hotel in Lodz, Poland, was given the award for the best conversion of an existing building to a hotel use.
The 278-room Andel's is part of the Summit Hotels & Resorts group and is located in a protected building which used to be a textile mill.
The award for the best newbuild hotel was given to the Hospes Maricel hotel in Mallorca and the Innovation Award to the Rabih Hage-designed Rough Luxe Hotel in London.
The Boundary hotel in London, UK, was named hotel of the year and the hotel's owner, British designer Sir Terence Conran, was handed the outstanding contribution of the year award.
The winners for the interior design categories were the Aurelio Hotel in Lech, Austria (best bedrooms); Story Hotel in Stockholm, Sweden (best restaurant); Copperhill Mountain Lodge in Are, Sweden (best spa and leisure facilities); The Augustine in Prague, Czech Republic (best bar); 25Hours Hotel in Frankfurt, Germany (best public areas); The Vine hotel in Madeira, Portugal (best suite); and Spain-based NH Hoteles (best standard, branded guest rooms).
The awards are now in their 12th year, and according to the judging panel's chair, Jeremy Blake, the number of entries was the highest ever.
"The overall level of entries was once again of a high standard and covered a wide range of recently completed hotel projects across Europe. The hotel industry was well represented across all aspects of design and delivery, which all contributed to an engaging and positive day of judging."
