Gymnastics centre opens in Dunfermline

A new centre, designed specifically for gymnastics, has opened in Dunfermline, Scotland.

The Bruce Street Gymnastics Centre is located in a leisure centre, specially converted to accommodate gymnasts.

Equipment features include a tumble track, a vault run up and a double minitramp set into the floor. There are also additional asymmetric bar stations, extra competition height beams, extra rings, and a new horizontal bar with a supporting platform.

The design and layout of the newly built acility also includes access for disabled users, relocating a lift formerly installed at Carnegie Leisure Centre, a disabled toilet and further alterations to the upper level making better use of space and providing a viewing gallery overlooking the main gymnastics hall.

The new centre has been funded by a partnership between Kingdom Gymnastics Trust and Fife Council, supported by sportscotland funding. The centre will provide for all aspects of gymnastics, from grass roots participation to elite competition.

Brian Goodall, chair of the Housing & Communities Committee at Fife Council, said: "This project will support and sustain the continued growth and development of gymnastics.

"The former Bruce Street Sports Centre has been part of a wider refurbishment project which will see an investment of over £17m in sport facilities in Dunfermline."

Louise Martin, sportscotland chair, added: "Sportscotland's investment of £100,000 in the Bruce Street facility will contribute to the continued development of the sport, both at a local and regional level."

The refurbishment project of the Bruce Street Leisure Centre was managed by Fife Council, in partnership with the three gymnastics groups who have relocated from Carnegie Leisure Centre.

Previous users of Bruce Street Sports Centre have been accommodated at other facilities in the area, including the new Duloch Leisure Centre. However, it is anticipated that many will revert to the refurbished Carnegie Leisure Centre when this project is complete in the latter half of 2010.
