Guildford entertainment venue topped out
A ceremony has marked the topping out of a new entertainment venue being developed in Guildford, Surrey, which is set to replace the town's former Civic Hall building.
The Austin-Smith:Lord-designed venue is being built by Hertfordshire-based contractor Willmott Dixon Construction, with the project currently "on time and on budget". When complete, the venue will include a 1,000-seat or 1,700-standing auditorium; multi-purpose studio space; two conference rooms and five seminar rooms; a café; bars; and foyer spaces.
Hampshire-based consultancy Scott Wilson also forms part of the team delivering the new venue, which is set to host a wide range of comedy, music and family shows, as well as offering community activities. Andrew Hodges, lead member for finance and resources at Guildford Borough Council, said: "This project represents a great investment by the council to support the local economy and future arts and entertainment opportunities.
"Strategic investment now will help businesses, residents and visitors make the most of Guildford for many years to come." Willmott Dixon Construction managing director Mark Tant added: "The topping out marks a significant point in time when we start to focus on the internal finishes as the building really starts to take shape."
The venue is scheduled to open in autumn 2011.
