Gruppe wins Museum of London's architecture competition

by Katie Buckley | 16 Apr 2014

Zurich-based architects Gruppe, have been announced as the winners of a competition organised by the Architecture Foundation and the Museum of London (MOL).

The winning design was chosen from more than 70 entries from around the world: competitors were asked to create a structure which encourages interaction between visitors.

Called the the House of Muses, the plywood structure is modelled on a pillar from an imaginary monument and is inspired by parts of the city’s history.

It will be situated outside the museum’s entrance during the London Festival of Architecture 2014 which runs from 1 June to 30 June. The structure will be unveiled on 6 June 2014 and will remain in place until 21 September 2014.

Grupppe has envisioned a space outside the museum’s entrance where people are challenged to reflect on the role of museums in modern life, with the aim of prompting responses from the public.

Nicholas Lobo Brennan, director of Gruppe, said the practice "wanted to work with the history of the site as a way to address the architectural issues facing the Museum of London."

He added that Gruppe "hopes the House of Muses structure becomes part of the everyday life of the area over the course of the summer."

The annual London Festival of Architecture has been running since 2004 and celebrates architectural experimentation, thinking and practice, with various events and installations happening across the city.
