Fountain Park leisure complex in Edinburgh gets a hotel

by Caroline Wilkinson | 01 Jul 2008

X Leisure, owner of Fountain Park leisure and retail complex in Edinburgh, has been granted planning permission for a new budget hotel with three restaurants by the city council.

The development, designed by architects SMC Hugh Martin Partnership, will consist of a 2,545 sq m, four-storey, 181-room, budget hotel with three family restaurants on the ground floor. The hotel will join the existing 13-screen Cineworld cinema, casino, restaurants and Mecca bingo.

Planning consultants Montagu Evans submitted the plans on behalf of X Leisure and in collaboration with the project managers, property consultants Cyril Sweett.

Alan Henderson, planning chief of Edinburgh City Council, said the plans to bulldoze the site, a former Brannigans bar – which was closed four years ago, will “add life” to the area and complement Fountainbridge’s long-term regeneration.

Nick Richie, project manager, said that X Leisure is currently in talks with a, yet to be named, budget hotel operator and prospective tenants for the restaurants.

Edinburgh Council has a masterplan for the redevelopment of the Fountainbridge area of Edinburgh which could benefit Fountain Park.
