Edgbaston launches £30m redevelopment project

Warwickshire County Cricket Club (WCCC) has unveiled detailed plans for the £30m revamp of Edgbaston cricket ground in Birmingham.

The project will see the ground's capacity increase by around 4,000 with the construction of a new stand, as well as a wider redevelopment of the site. The new stand will provide improved facilities for both fans and players, including new changing rooms, bars and restaurants. Edgbaston's corporate hospitality and events space will also receive an upgrade.

A new hotel, a residential development and offices are also included in the plans, designed to maximise WCCC's commercial opportunities. WCCC operations and development director, Phil MacDonald, said: "We have worked hard with our partners to produce a truly innovative design that will reaffirm Edgbaston's place as a world-class venue. "The redevelopment of the ground and wider masterplan will benefit the city by creating new jobs and giving Birmingham a stadium to be proud of. This project is a key part of our future plans for the club and our ability to remain competitive when bidding for international matches."

Birmingham-based urban regeneration specialists, MCD Developments, have been appointed to deliver the project having worked on the redevelopment scheme at Essex County Cricket Club. Architects Broadway Malyan, planning consultants Turley Associates, urban design consultants Urban Initiatives, property and construction practice Rider Levett Bucknall and marketing consultants Golley Slater have also been working on the project.

The project follows the decision by the England and Wales Cricket Board in April 2006 to award one of next year's Ashes Test matches to Cardiff's SWALEC Stadium instead of established venues such as Edgbaston and Manchester's Old Trafford. Proposals for the redevelopment of Edgbaston have been put on public view before a planning application is submitted at a later date.
