Doncaster waterfront plans approved
Doncaster Council has approved plans for the second phase of the town's waterfront project which will include a newly-built, 90-berth marina.
The masterplan outlines a number of key priorities for the regeneration of 15 hectares (37.1 acres) of land to the north of Doncaster town centre, adjacent to the education hub building, which was completed in 2006 as part of the first stage of the scheme. Included in the plans for the second stage of the waterfront development is a number of new public areas and leisure facilities, while a Victorian pumphouse will be refurbished to house a cultural attraction.
A new pedestrian gateway is also proposed, connecting the town centre with the waterfront, where people will be able to walk along the canal, and it is hoped that the scheme will link with a number of other projects currently under development in Doncaster. Funding worth £23m has been secured from Yorkshire Forward and the European Union for the project, which will be delivered through a Private Public Partnership and is supported by British Waterways, Doncaster Economic Partnership and Doncaster College.
The next stage of the strategy will see an outline planning application prepared, as well as a public consultation, and it is hoped that the development will be completed within 10 years.
