Contractor to start Horley demolition work

Pellikaan Construction is set to start demolition work on a former school building in Horley, Surrey, which is making way for a new £7.5m leisure centre development.

The Holland-based contractor has already commenced work to prepare the site for the demolition of Court Lodge Secondary School, which is to get underway on 17 September. Masonry from the existing building will be crushed on site and reused to provide hardcore for the foundations of the new leisure centre ahead of the construction phase, which is due to start in November.

When complete, the S&P Architects-designed facility will comprise a six-lane, 25m swimming pool accessible to disabled users; a teaching pool; and a 50-station fitness gym with free weights. An exercise and dance studio and a four-court sports hall also form part of the centre, along with changing facilities; a reception with viewing gallery; and car parking to be shared with Horley Town Football Club.

Adam de Save, executive member for leisure and wellbeing at Reigate and Banstead Borough Council, said: The new Horley Leisure Centre will provide significantly improved leisure facilities for residents. It is great to see work starting on site." A Pellikaan spokesperson added: "We will maintain an open door policy throughout our time on site and there will always be someone available to talk to if you have any concerns or questions."

Horley Leisure Centre is scheduled to open in January 2012 and will replace the town's existing Horley Anderson Centre, which will remain open until the scheme is complete.
