Christchurch's temporary stadium opens

Crusaders rugby team has played its first game in Christchurch, New Zealand, for nearly two years after its new home, the temporary AMI Stadium, opened its doors in Addington.

Insurance group AMI, which has a naming rights sponsorship deal for the club's earthquake-damaged home elsewhere in the city, recently signed a similar agreement for the new venue.

Designed by Populous, the 18,000-seat stadium comprises two partially-covered stands and will be Christchurch's only outdoor sports and entertainment facility for the next few years.

Built on the site of Rugby League Park, the temporary structure was delivered in under 100 days and has a lifespan of three-to-five years. Its capacity can be increased to 25,000.

New Zealand's government has underwritten the cost of the development, with Christchurch City Council and New Zealand Rugby Union also contributing towards the scheme.

Before Crusaders' first game at the venue, New Zealand minister for Canterbury earthquake recovery Gerry Brownlee said; "The new AMI Stadium is a symbol of the city's recovery and will be a great asset for Canterbury.

"It will deliver some normality for Cantabrians who have not been able to enjoy large sporting and entertainment fixtures for more than a year."

In addition to Crusaders, the stadium will also provide a home for Canterbury rugby team. It is also poised to host rugby union test matches, community and cultural events and music concerts."
