April grand opening for Amsterdam's new-look Rijksmuseum

Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum has announced it will open its doors to the public in April 2013 following the completion of a renovation and restoration programme lasting nearly 10 years.

The new-look attraction will explore the history of the Netherlands from the Middle Ages to the present, with the EUR375m (US$471m, £297m) project led by architects Cruz y Ortiz.

First opened in July 1885, the work has included the restoration of the main site to the initial designs of 19th century architect Cuypers. New structures have also been added.

France-based Jean-Michel Wilmotte was chosen to furnish the Rijksmuseum's new galleries in conjunction with Cruz y Ortiz, with around 7,500 artworks and items to go on show.

The attraction will become one of the first national museums in the world to open every day. It will hold a grand opening on 13 April, before welcoming the public from 14 April.

A spokesperson said: "After almost 10 years of renovation, restoration and alteration, the completely renovated Rijksmuseum will tell the story of the Netherlands from the Middle Ages to the present.

"A new display of the collection, a renewed building, new public facilities, a revamped garden and a new Asian Pavilion - only Rembrandt's most celebrated painting The Night Watch will return to its former place."

• Earlier this year, it was announced that Amsterdam's Stedelijk Museum will be reopening to the public on 23 September following its own renovation and expansion project.

Nearly all of its spaces have been converted into galleries, while a 10,000sq m (107,000sq ft) building designed by Benthem Crouwel Architects will house a café and other amenities.
