Perth transforming as waterfront project gets underway

by Miguel de Sousa | 18 Jun 2013

The city of Perth in Western Australia is currently building a A$2,6bn (£1,57bn, €1,83bn, US$2,46bn) waterfront development which it hopes will return the city's focus to the iconic Swan River.

Called Elizabeth Quay - to honour Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's royal visit there in 2011 - the project covers a 10 hectare (24,7 acre) site including a 2,7 hectare (6,67 acre) inlet on the edge of the Central Business District.

It is anticipated there will be 400 hotel rooms, an Indigenous Cultural Centre, 800 residential buildings, office and retail space.

An inlet forms the focal point of the project and will measure approximately 150m (492 ft) across and 200m (656 ft) long. An island will be located within the inlet. It will be a garden space with a

series of narrow paths bounded by plants. The island gradually slopes down toward the water's edge.

Other features include a Waterfront Promenade, which at 1km (0,62 miles) long, will provide a continuous, walkable circuit around the inlet and connect with the island.

Another part of the project, known as The Landing, will provide informal seating for large groups of people to attend events and look out over the river.

Perth city officials hope the public areas around the waterfront inlet will be available for use in mid-2015.

Resource-rich Western Australia is spending billions on its capital city, by embarking on several ambitious projects aimed at meeting the demands of its growing population and tourist potential.
