SportsDock complex opens in London

SportsDock, a new £21m complex to be used by Team USA as its training base during the 2012 Games, has opened at the University of East London's (UEL) Docklands Campus.

Canterbury-based architects Clague are behind the design of the facility, which was built by Denne Construction - part of the Leadbitter Group. The project was managed by Ball Hall.

A Precor-equipped fitness centre and offering cardiovascular equipment and free weights is among SportsDock's facilities, along with two indoor arenas catering for a range of sports.

Elsewhere, the complex incorporates two outdoor 3G five-a-side football pitches and dance studios, as well as a sports café, changing facilities and a sports injury clinic.

Meanwhile, Team USA has kitted out a strength and conditioning suite at SportsDock. The equipment will then be left for community use following the 2012 Games.

UEL vice-chancellor Professor Patrick McGhee said: "The opening of SportsDock will herald the dawn of an exciting new era for sport in East London.

"This epitomises what Olympic legacy is all about and will ensure students, staff and the local community have a world-class sports facility on their own doorstep at an affordable price."

UEL funded the project with support from the London Marathon Trust, the mayor's legacy fund and England Basketball.

SportsDock is now fully open to the public but will be temporarily unavailable during the Games – when Team USA uses the facility as its training base.
