Work starts on St Albans leisure scheme
Preparatory work has started on a multi-million pound scheme to revamp the Westminster Lodge Leisure Centre in St Albans, Hertfordshire.
A number of buildings are to be demolished in order to make way for the S&P Architects-designed facility, with the main construction phase due to get underway in January. The new Westminster Lodge Leisure Centre, which is due for completion in summer 2012, will feature a 500sq m (5,382sq ft) spa area with a 60sq m (646sq ft) terrace overlooking the nearby abbey.
A total of 647sq m (6,964sq ft) of water space and an overall capacity for 223 swimmers will be provided, including a 25m x 17m, eight-lane main swimming pool with 50 per cent moveable floor. A 17m x 10m learner pool with fully-moveable floor; a climbing wall; a 200-station fitness suite with cycle spinning studio and a four-court sports hall are also proposed.
Anthony Rowlands, St Albans City and District Council portfolio holder for sport and leisure said: "This new leisure centre is all the more welcome because it has been designed with the needs of the whole community in mind." The existing facility will remain open during the construction phase, before being demolished when the new-build complex opens.
