Bristol City submits stadium plans

Bristol City Football Club (BCFC) has submitted detailed plans for the construction of a new £65m stadium at Ashton Vale, as well as outline proposals for a mixed-use scheme on surrounding land.

Plans for the new 30,000-seat venue have been drawn-up following three sets of public consultation with local residents and stakeholders, and include the potential to add a further 12,000 seats as part of Bristol's bid to be a host city for the 2018 World Cup. The stadium, which has been designed by Populous and will replace the club's current Ashton Gate home, will occupy a former landfill site adjacent to the Long Ashton park and ride facility, as well as a David Lloyd Fitness Centre.

BCFC chair Steve Lansdown said: "A new stadium would bring substantial benefits for both the Club and the city as a whole, creating a world-class sports facility, strengthening the local economy and driving the ongoing regeneration of south Bristol." The news comes as several cities across England launch their bids to become host cities at the 2018 World Cup if England is awarded the right to host the tournament.

Nottingham, Newcastle and Gateshead, Sheffield and Portsmouth are all competing alongside Bristol, as well as Leicester, Sunderland, London, Birmingham and Manchester. A total of 15 cities are expected to bid.
