Carlo Ratti Associati’s Milan university walls to be built by robots
by Luke Cloherty | 29 Aug 2018
The brickwork for a new university building in Milan will be arranged and assembled with the help of robots. The University of Milan’s new science campus, designed by Carlo Ratti Associati (CRA), will showcase images or symbols in a potentially reconfigurable 3D talking facade. CRA founding partner Carlo Ratti said: “Today massive open online courses, learning by making, continuous education and so on demand a fundamental rethinking of the architecture
Ballet-dancing robots and kinetic sculpture bring Hyundai story to life in South Korea
by Alice Davis | 12 Apr 2017
South Korean automobile manufacturer Hyundai has opened “car culture experience park” in Goyang in the north of the country. The company brandland is spread out over three floors, accessed through a large lobby with a large-scale digital display projecting images of Hyundai’s latest road and rally cars. The building, called Hyundai Motorstudio Goyang, was designed by Viennese architects Delugan Meissl, while Stuttgart’s Atelier Brückner were behind the exhibition. It is
Robots use recycled bricks to build sinuous and striking Shanghai art studio
by Kim Megson | 15 Mar 2017
A crack team of robots have comprehensively renovated a community art gallery in Shanghai, predominantly using recycled bricks. The innovative project is the work of Chinese design studio Archi-Union Architects, who programmed the robots to build a new exterior facade for the West Bund Art Exhibition Area in the city’s Xuhui district. Grey-green bricks were taken from the existing gallery building, which had been deemed unfit for purpose, and carefully
Are wall-crawling robots the builders of the future?
by Kim Megson | 21 Aug 2016
The next generation of buildings could be created by wall-crawling robots. That’s the view of robotics researcher Maria Yablonina, a graduate of the University of Stuttgart who has unveiled a way of using robot builders to create complex structures quickly, cheaply and efficiently. Yablonina’s project, Mobile Robotic Fabrication System for Filament Structures, has been developed with the university's Institute for Computational Design (ICD). Semi-autonomous wall climbing robots are programmed to
Robert De Niro hotel, biomimicry robots, Yves Saint Laurent museum
by Kim Megson | 21 May 2016
This week was a big one for leisure architects, designers and developers in the exciting world of museum design. In Hungary, local architects Napur overcame strong competition to win the contract for the city’s Museum of Ethnography building; new video footage emerged of David Adjaye’s National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington D.C; the Heneghan Peng-designed Palestine Museum opened without any exhibits; and French architects Studio KO
'The fourth industrial revolution is underway': Achim Menges launches robot-built pavilion at V&A
by Kim Megson | 20 May 2016
A garden pavilion fabricated by robots has opened to the public in the grounds of the Victoria & Albert Museum (V&A) in London. The Elytra Filament Pavilion is formed of tightly-woven carbon fibre cells, inspired by shells of flying Elytra beetles. The pavilion has been created by experimental architects Achim Menges and Moritz Dörstelmann in collaboration with engineers Jan Knippers and Thomas Auer and researchers from the University of Stuttgart.
Robots build sea urchin prefab pavilion using biomimicry
by Kim Megson | 16 May 2016
A sub-species of sea urchin has inspired a group of German architects, designers, engineers and biologists to develop an intricate robotically-produced pavilion. The Sand Dollar’s two-layered shell is formed of extremely thin fibres and stretching plates, connected in such a way that the integrity of the shell remains strong even as the urchin grows. This realisation prompted researchers Achim Menges and Jan Knippers to explore how robotic biomimicry could be
Robot-built pavilion will take centre stage as V&A explores the future of engineering
by Kim Megson | 03 Feb 2016
Visitors to the Victoria & Albert Museum (V&A) in London this May will be able to explore a garden pavilion inspired by nature and fabricated by robots in front of their eyes. The Elytra Filament Pavilion – created by experimental architects Achim Menges and Moritz Dörstelmann in collaboration with engineers Jan Knippers and Thomas Auer – will launch a special Engineering Season at the museum. The installation will explore the
