Saudi Arabia to fund US$1bn sport city in Iraq

The government of Saudi Arabia has pledged to fund the construction of a US$1bn "sports city" close to the Iraqi capital city Baghdad. The announcement was made by the Saudi commerce and investment minister Majid bin Abdullah Al-Qassabi, following a visit by senior Saudi ministers to Baghdad last week. Kansas City, US-based 360 Architecture is to work with Anwar Soura General Contracting Company on the development of two 30,000-seat soccer stadiums in Iraq. The design-build team has been appointed by the country's Ministry of Youth and Sport to deliver the venues in Basrah and Najaf, which will also incorporate practice facilities.
