Merlin unveils record-breaking Hyperia coaster at Thorpe Park

Merlin Entertainments has launched its new Hyperia rollercoaster at Thorpe Park to celebrate its 45th year. The ride is billed as the UK's tallest, fastest and most weightless rollercoaster, beating The Big One in Blackpool for height by 13ft and at 81 mph, besting Thorpe Park's Stealth coaster for speed. Ireland’s Tayto Park eyes Europe’s big boys with massive new roller coaster

Tayto Park – one of Ireland’s most popular tourist attractions – has had a planning application for a €25m (£19.8m, $33.6m) expansion and world-class roller coaster approved by the local council. Alton Towers Resort has worked with researchers at New Scientist to ensure its news £18m roller coaster The Smiler delivers park visitors maximum thrills. The ride, which will reach speeds of 85km/hr along 1,170m of track, will feature "twisted psychological effects to mess with riders' minds" including blinding lights and optical illusions to maximise the fear factor. Green Lantern rollercoaster for Six Flags

Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson Township, New Jersey, US is to install a new Green Lantern-themed rollercoaster. The 154ft-high ride is named after the DC Comics character and boasts a 45-degree drop and five loops. The ride is being designed by the Swiss firm Bolliger & Mabillard. The opening of the ride will coincide with the release of the Green Lantern movie, starring Ryan Reynolds, in June next year.
