Hoshino Resorts to open hot spring Ryokan in historic onsen town of Kusatsu, Japan with design by Tatsuro Sasaki Architects

A new hot spring resort is due to open in the historic ski and spa town of Kusatsu, Japan, in Q2 of 2026. The forest resort, owned and operated by Hoshino Resorts, will be connected to the town by a private tunnel, exclusively reserved for resort guests. Interdisciplinary architecture firm Sasaki Associates have released images of their proposal to change the face of Hongkou stadium in Shanghai, China. The future 50,000-seat sports complex will feature a number of wellness-focused green spaces, recreational amenities, and VIP clubs, plus a "cantilevered restaurant" offering panoramic views of the Shanghai skyline. A long-abandoned railyard in Lakeland, Florida will soon be granted a second life as forested recreational zone and cultural 'oasis'. International architecture practice Sasaki Associates have unveiled an ambitious masterplan for the largest mixed-use development in Southeast Asia: an island-based metropolis in Malaysia called Forest City. The studio – whose previous work includes waterfront parks and river walkways in Chicago and Los Angeles – have envisioned “a compact and walkable metropolis with a variety of civic, cultural and recreational amenities set in a lush, tropical landscape with unparalleled ocean views.”
