Museum and memorial to victims of slavery and lynching planned for Alabama

A new museum and memorial in Montgomery, Alabama has been designed by MASS Design Group and the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) to confront America’s history of slavery. The Memorial to Peace and Justice, which is scheduled to open in 2017, is planned as a space of remembrance “that embraces truth and inspires reflection and change.” It will be the country’s first national memorial to victims of lynching. The Cook Natural Science Museum in Decatur, Alabama, has unveiled plans for a brand new US$17m (€15.6m, £11m) facility, which will see the museum move from what was once a by-appointment warehouse tour into a fully-fledged educational facility. Increasing in size from 5,000sq ft (464sq m) to 57,000sq ft (5,295sq m), the interactive museum, designed by Huntsville-based, will move from its current home to a new location in downtown Decatur.
