Preparatory work starts on Telford scheme
Preparatory work is now underway in the Southwater area of Telford, Shropshire to clear the site ahead of a major £250m regeneration scheme.
Tree works are being carried out around the edge of Southwater Lake and outside Meeting Point House to allow earthworks to be undertaken ahead of the main build phase. Telford and Wrekin Council (TWC) is yet to appoint a main contractor for the Southwater development, which will include a hotel, cafés, bars and restaurants.
A new leisure hub - incorporating a leisure pool and a cinema - also proposed as part of the regeneration scheme. MACE, Barton Willmore and civil engineers Jacobs are working alongisde the council on the scheme, which has received £9.5m from the Homes and Communities Agency.
TWC leader Andrew Eade said: "It is a massive scheme for the centre of Telford and will provide the town with a vibrant, beating heart and something that everyone can be very proud of. "In order to prepare the site for the building work to take place, we need to carry out environmental clearance works."
