John Puttick Associates creates Youth Zone with fitness, arts, sport and wellbeing spaces
A fitness club with a boxing studio, dance and performing arts studio and a four-court sports hall are just a few of the facilities included in plans for the new Horizon Youth Zone in Grimsby, UK.
The 5,440sq m centre will also include a climbing wall, health and wellbeing room and an outdoor 3G pitch.
Planning approval has been given for the redevelopment, which will be located in the town's historic West Haven Maltings and Migar House buildings.
The 1820s Grade-II Listed buildings, which have a considerable presence in the town, have been vacant and neglected for many years.
The redevelopment – led by architects John Puttick Associates – is modelled on Onside's existing Youth Zones, which include Croydon UK’s Legacy Youth Zone, which was designed by the same practice.
John Puttick, said: “Gaining planning and listed building consent for Horizon Youth Zone is an important step forward for this significant regeneration project.
"The work involved will breathe new life into the impressive historic buildings and bring opportunities for young people to the heart of Grimsby.
"We’re looking forward to developing the project further with Onside, the local authority and wider community.”
The project is being undertaken by national charity, Onside, which currently operates 14 Youth Zones in the UK, welcoming young people (aged 8-19 – or up to 25-years-old with additional needs) who pay just 50p per visit.
Each Youth Zone is open seven days a week and offers a choice of more than 20 recreational, arts and sports activities – supervised by experienced youth workers.
