Glasgow's new £74m Riverside Museum is starting to take shape with the construction of the building's steel framework now underway.
The site, which will be the new home of Glasgow's Museum of Transport, is at the centre of a wider £800m regeneration project for the city's harbour. Designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, work on the Riverside Museum is being carried out by the main contractor, HBG. The project is being funded by Glasgow City Council along with more than £18m from the Heritage Lottery Fund. A charitable trust, the Riverside Museum Appeal, has also been established to raise £5m towards the new facility.
A spokesperson for Glasgow Museums, a programme managed by Culture and Sport Glasgow on behalf of the council, said that building work is expected to be complete by the end of 2010, with a scheduled opening date of Spring 2011. Once complete, the new museum will have 7,500sq m (80,729 sq ft) of public space with more than 3,000 objects on display, including the Tall Ship Glenlee, which has already been restored and will be moored outside the museum.
