Snøhetta's energy-positive, circular hotel to be built on a Norwegian fjord will open in 2022
The Snøhetta-designed energy-positive hotel Svart, which will be situated on the Holandsfjorden fjord at the foot of the Svartisen glacier in Norway’s Meløy municipality, has been given an opening date of 2022.
The concept, which was revealed in 2018, is still on course to be completed in 2021.
Developed by Miris and designed to the Powerhouse standard, it is expected to use around 85 per cent less energy than the traditional hotel and to produce more energy than it uses.
The 99-room property will house four restaurants, a 1,000sq m (10,800sq ft) spa, a sustainable farm, an education centre and a design laboratory, with its amenities open to overnight guests, day visitors and the local community.
The circular hotel will be raised up above the fjord on a wooden supporting structure, avoiding any impact on the land and keeping disruption to the bed of the fjord to a minimum.
The wooden structure also incorporates a boardwalk into its design, while glazing around its entirety will provide panoramic views of the fjord, the glacier and the Northern Lights.
