Opening date set for 3XN-designed Olympic House

by Andrew Manns | 19 Jun 2019
The new Olympic House combines symbolism, functionality, and sustainability
– Albert II, Prince of Monaco

The new headquarters of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), also known as “Olympic House”, will open to the public on 23 June – International Olympic Day.

Situated in Bourget Park in Lausanne, Switzerland, the 25,000 sq m building was conceived as a metaphor for the IOC’s commitment to “transparency and openness”, and features a layered and sinuous façade.

The centre's premises, which contain offices for 500 IOC employees, also comprise a cafeteria, an auditorium, rooftop seating, and green areas with views of Lake Geneva.

According to 3XN, the overall form of the structure is meant to both minimise carbon emissions and evoke the “graceful movements of an athlete”.

Olympic House was recently recognised for its environmentally conscious design, for which it garnered the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum certificate – the highest certification level of the LEED building rating system.

“The new Olympic House combines symbolism, functionality, and sustainability,” said Prince Albert II of Monaco, chair of the IOC Sustainability and Legacy Commission.

“With the achievement of unmatched standard levels, it demonstrates how the IOC is turning its sustainability commitments into action, serving as an inspiration for the entire Olympic Movement.”
