East meets West in Four Seasons Kuala Lumpur
– Ed Ng, co-founder of AB Concept
Asian hotel interiors specialists AB Concept, co-founded by Ed Ng, have designed restaurant, bar and lounge areas for the new the new Four Seasons Kuala Lumpur.
Yun House, the main restaurant, has a decadent courtyard-style reception with an elaborate pewter back panel. Its high ceilings and natural light reference Malaysia’s longstanding tradition of socialising in gardens.
The design of Yun House was inspired by legends of Canton voyagers, according to Ng.
Ng said: “It was important our designs paid homage to Chinese and Malaysian heritage. Through the use of pewter, rattan and bright colours we created a warm familiar feeling of family, openness and opulence for guests to enjoy.”
The Lounge at Four Seasons is a veranda-style space with pale wooden accents throughout to pay homage to the city’s colonial history.
Access to Bar Trigona is disguised by panelled doors. The room is decorated in calming shades of imperial blue and teal and has a monumental ceiling. The bar has been designed as a retreat for guests.
Incorporating leather, glass and bronze – materials traditionally used in Malaysian crafts – the bar embraces the connection to the cityscape.
Tom Roelens, general manager at Four Seasons Hotel Kuala Lumpur, said: “AB Concept has brought our contemporary vision to life with their exquisite, thoughtful design inspired by the dynamic mix of culture and cosmopolitan energy found throughout modern-day Kuala Lumpur.
“Each outlet has its own unique personality, such as the motifs in Yun House which celebrate Cantonese culture and the rattan elements in Bar Trigona which elevate the guest experience with visual storytelling through the design elements.”
