Star architects enter race to design Brussels' own Pompidou Centre

A host of the world’s most high-profile architecture practices have entered the race to design a new branch of the Pompidou Centre art museum in Brussels, Belgium.
The studio of Richard Rogers – who designed the landmark Pompidou in Paris in 1977 alongside Renzo Piano – are in contention for the €125m (US$136m, £104m) project, along with 91 other design teams.
Among those to make the star-studded longlist are Bjarke Ingels Group, AL_A, Foster + Partners, Caruso St. John, Snøhetta, MVRDV, Coop Himmelb(l)au, David Chipperfield Architects, OMA, SANAA, Shigeru Ban, Odile Decq, Zaha Hadid Architects and WilkinsonEyre.

The Urban Development Corporation of the Brussels-Capital Region is converting the Citroën Yser Garage – once Europe’s largest car factory – into the largest new museum in Brussels since the beginning of the 20th century.
In addition to a 15,000sq m (161,500sq ft) Pompidou outpost, there will also be a 10,000sq m (107,600sq ft) home for the International Centre for Urbanism, Architecture and Landscape and 10,000sq m of public spaces for cultural, educational and recreational activities.
A selection committee will now begin the process of shortlisting seven candidates. The final practices in contention will then submit their design proposals and an international panel, led by architect Roger Diener, will choose a winner in Q1 2018.
The completed project is scheduled to open in 2020.
