Nature-inspired spa opens on Florida’s Gulf Coast
A new resort with a nature-inspired spa has opened adjacent to an environmentally protected 208-acre state park along Florida’s Gulf Coast.
Located in Destin, Florida, The Henderson features 170 bedrooms and architecture “reminiscent of a grand seaside manor of yesteryear.”
Atlanta-based architect Cooper Carry used traditional coastal architecture, including steep gabled rooflines, shingles and a design that references Florida’s nautical history.
The Salamander Spa has 11 treatment rooms as well as a ladies steam room, sauna and whirlpool that overlooks the treetops of the state park.
The resort also boasts a number of spa guest rooms, furnished and equipped with sounds and smells of the region, as well as a variety of spa amenities.
Other wellness activities include a sun-lit fitness rooms, a family-oriented swimming pool with a lazy river, and hiking and biking at the adjacent state park.
Interior designer Karen Kent of Kent Interior Design in Atlanta created spaces intended to connect guests to the environment, with wooden floors, reclaimed beams and trusses, and local artwork.
“After a decade of development and meticulous planning, our family is thrilled and humbled that opening day is finally here,” said Bill Dunavant III, president and CEO of spa owner Dunavant Enterprises. “It has always been our vision to offer a level of luxury previously unavailable between New Orleans and Sarasota, while also providing a destination resort of which the entire region can be proud. Today, I can confidently state that we have delivered.”
