National football and rugby stadium mooted for Luxembourg

by Matthew Campelli | 25 Nov 2016

A new national stadium accommodating football and rugby is expected to be built and ready in Luxembourg by October 2019.

The mayor of the eponymous capital city, Lydie Polfer, unveiled plans for the 9,385-capacity venue, which is expected to cost €60m (£51.2m, US$63.6m).

Located on Boulevard de Kockelscheuer, the proposed stadium has been designed by the BENG architecture practice.

Preparatory work on the site is expected to begin in May 2017, with construction starting in September 2017.

Once built, the stadium will include a roof for the spectator area, VIP areas, kiosks, a business club, a press room and parking area.

Of the €60m, Luxembourg’s sports ministry will pay roughly 70 per cent of the cost, with an upper limit of €40m (£34.1m, US$42.4m).

“The new ground is built to the standards of Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium and with respect to Twickenham,” Luxembourg Rugby Federation president Steve Karier told local news outlet Wort.

“It’s close to the best you can get at this point.”
