Studio Gang will design next year's Summer Block Party for Washington D.C building museum
Studio Gang have been lined up to produce a temporary installation for the National Building Museum's 2017 Summer Block Party, following in the footsteps of Snarkitecture and Bjarke Ingels.
The design concept is being kept under wraps for now, but the studio promised it will “engage the spirit of creative experimentation that has defined the success of the Summer Block Party series.”
Previous installations include a complex maze, a huge ball pool and, this year, an Iceberg-themed explorable space. The brief provided by the museum asks the chosen practice to create innovative and interactive experiences that temporarily transform the museum’s home and challenge perceptions of the built environment.
Studio Gang have collaborated with the museum several times before, and provided a translucent curtain made of marble for the 2003 exhibition Masonry Variations – a project studio founder Jeanne Gang said “informed our thinking about material innovation and research.”
“It’s great to return to the National Building Museum,” she added. “We’re looking forward to building on the legacy and energy of the Summer Series, in the historic space of the Museum’s Great Hall.”
Chase W. Rynd, the museum’s executive director, said: “With their creativity and impeccable design credentials, Studio Gang are poised to reimagine the possibilities of this series.”
Snarkitecture and Bjarke Ingels designed the installation in 2015 and 2014 respectively.
