Architects, developers and investors invited to declare interest in Hong Kong's 28 hectare Kai Tak Sports Park

The government of Hong Kong is seeking non-binding Expressions of Interest for a planned sports park in Kai Tak.

Construction companies and joint ventures, investors, sports operators, facility managers and stadium architects are invited to make their interest in the project clear before 8 July 2016.

The Kai Tak Sports Park is described by the government as “the most important investment in sports infrastructure in recent decades”. The site – spread across 28 hectares of land – will feature multi-purpose sports venues capable of hosting major international sports events, and seven hectares of landscaped park for relaxation and exercise.

The main facility planned for the project is a 50,000-capacity stadium to host international football and rugby matches as well as concerts, carnivals and major entertainment events. Also planned is a 5,000 seat public sports ground for school athletic events and public use and an indoor multi-sports arena that can hold 7,000 spectators.

The government believes its investment in the park will promote the enjoyment and benefits of sports for people of different ages and abilities by providing a wide variety of facilities, while supporting elite athletics and attracting international events.

In addition, the park will have a children's playground, a fitness area, a jogging track, a cycling track and outdoor sports courts. Leisure amenities include retail space, food and beverage areas, a hotel and office space for the sports community.

Construction on the project is planned to begin in 2018 and take four years to complete. Public outreach programmes are currently taking place to inform citizens about the project and to engage them in keeping fit, healthy and active.

Kai Tak Sports Park is itself part of a much wider development that has been in the pipeline for decades. This project, called Kai Tak Development, will ultimately cover 320 hectares stretching to Victoria Harbour. Community views collected as part of a public consultation process have shaped a vision for the area as a new hub of sports, recreation, tourism, entertainment and quality housing.
