JSa Arquitectura creates retro 60s surf styling for The Cape resort, Mexico
Thompson Hotels has opened its first property in Mexico's Cabo San Lucas, blending an urban aesthetic with a retro, 1960s Southern California-meets-Baja vibe.
Located on the southernmost tip of the Baja California Sur Peninsula, The Cape offers unobstructed views of The Arch, the area’s famous landmark, from virtually any vantage point on the property.
Perched on Monuments Beach, both the 161-bedroom property and the spa were designed by Javier Sanchez and Benedikt Fahlbusch of JSa Arquitectura, with interior design by Marisabel Gomez Vazquez of Arquitectura de Interiores.
Sanchez envisioned a seamless transition between indoors and outdoors, and a juxtaposition of modern and natural elements. The resulting sleek, modern design, created in collaboration with Gomez Vasquez, is softened by an open-air layout and features contrasting design elements, such as the lobby’s deep black concrete ceilings suspended above a life-size whale sculpture made from salvaged driftwood.
The public spaces and guestrooms feature custom-designed, mid-century modern furnishings, while hand-painted original tilework from Jose Noe Suro line the floors throughout the resort.
The resort features also a seven-treatment-room, 12,464sq ft (1,558sq m) spa called Currents, that also includes two outdoor cabana rooms. Treatments can be booked at one of two outdoor cabanas located directly on the beach for no extra charge.
The spa offers guests “a setting nearly devoid of outside stimuli,” the company said, with dark walls and no outside noise except the sound of waves, which is audible through the breezy open hallways.
The resort also includes two pools – one with a swim-up bar and the other, a saltwater pool, built within a natural rock formation on the property – as well as a rooftop lounge and a fitness centre with views of the Sea of Cortez and with separate rooms for personal training and yoga.
“As our first Thompson resort property, The Cape embodies the brand’s iconic urban edge, while also organically integrating the breathtaking scenery and carefree luxury unique to the Los Cabos destination,” said Niki Leondakis, CEO of Commune Hotels & Resorts – the multi-brand hotel company that manages Thompson Hotels.
