Government launches architecture and built environment review

by Jessica Tasman-Jones | 26 Mar 2013

The British government has launched an independent review of architecture and the built environment with aims to better shape policy to achieve high quality design.

The report - expected to be complete by the end of the year - will be led by London-based architect Sir Terry Farrell with support provided by an advisory panel.

In addition to the government's role in promoting quality design the review will look at the economic benefits of architecture, cultural heritage and the built environment, and promoting education and outreach and developing skills.

Culture minister Ed Vaizey said: "Good design builds communities, creates quality of life, and makes places better for people to live, work and play in."

He urged the architecture and design industries to contribute their views when the panel issues a call for evidence shortly.

Farrell said: "Many countries have an effective architecture policy and I intend to learn from what has worked elsewhere and also learn form all those involved here in architecture and the built environment."

Farrell is known for his work on the Home Office and Greenwich Peninsula in the UK, and Korea's Incheon airport in Seoul and Guangzhou Station in China.

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) said it would be playing a leading a role in the review and looked forward to working closely with Farrell.

President Angela Brady said: "Architecture is not an issue which fits neatly into any one Government Department, so a cross-cutting review of this nature is essential to make sure that there is a coordinated, joined-up approach across government.
