Midlands tennis club architect appointed
Glenn Howells Architects (GHA) has been appointed to draw up plans for the £11m transformation of Edgbaston Priory Tennis Club in Birmingham, following a design competition.
A planning application is due to be submitted later this year for the project, which will include a new performance centre, six new indoor courts, a new gym and a revamped clubhouse, as well as a new showcase court. The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) recently committed up to £5m towards the development, which aims to secure the long-term future of the AEGON Classic, the LTA's annual international women's event.
Robert Bray, chief executive of Edgbaston Priory Tennis Club, said: "Not only will the proposed development boost the club's reputation as an international tournament venue, it will cement Birmingham's reputation as a beacon in tennis excellence throughout the country and bring considerable investment into the grass roots level of the city." GHA lead architect Helen Newman added: "Not only is this a once in a lifetime opportunity to provide members and the local community with the very best sporting and social facilities at one of Birmingham's most prestigious venues, but also to establish the Club's reputation as a prominent international tournament venue for generations to come."
