New Glasgow arts centre set for opening

A number of events and activities have been announced to mark the launch of a new centre for the arts and creativity in Glasgow, which will open its doors to the public on 12 September.
The opening weekend of Trongate 103 will feature printing, self-portrait and board painting workshops, live music performances and an opportunity to view the archives of the Glasgow Print Studio (GPS). Housed within a renovated six-storey B-listed Edwardian warehouse in the city centre, the venue has been designed by architects Elder and Canon and is set to become a creative hub for the production and exhibition of contemporary art.
The venue will provide a new home for a range of arts and creative organisations, including GPS, Street Level Photoworks, Glasgow Centre for Media Access, the Russian Cultural Centre, Glasgow Independent Studio and Project Room and Sharmanka Kinetic Theatre. Project Ability and Transmission will also use the facility, which has been funded by Glasgow City Council, the Scottish Arts Council, Scottish Enterprise and the Merchant City Townscape Heritage Partnership in a bid to provide a place for the public to participate in a wide range of art.
A Doors Open Day weekend on 19 and 20 September will also provide visitors with the chance to take a tour of the centre, while the Merchant City Festival between 25 and 27 September will showcase the organisations based at Trongate 103. The centre will also offer classes and training courses for members of the public, as well as curriculum-based education schemes for local schools and outreach projects for local youth groups.
