BIG and Mecanoo win at INSIDE World Festival of Interiors
Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) and Mecanoo have been among the winners at the INSIDE World Festival of Interiors – the annual awards that celebrate the best interior designs from around the globe over the past 12 months.
INSIDE is the sister event of the World Architecture Festival (WAF), with this year's events running concurrently from 4-6 December in Amsterdam.
INSIDE celebrates projects across a variety of categories, with one category winner eventually being awarded the World Interior of the Year accolade.
BIG's win came in the 'Bars & Restaurants' category for its work on Noma in Copenhagen, Denmark, with the judges praising the studio for creating architecture that "puts the food experience centre-stage" and creating "a variety of intimate and homely atmospheres unified by consistent and considered materiality."
Also in the hospitality sector, OHLAB won the 'Hotels' category with its Can Bordoy project in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. It was commended for its re-use of a run-down but elegant 500-year-old abandoned building.
J.C. Architecture's JCA Living Lab in Taipei City, Taiwan, won in the 'Residential' category, with judges describing the project as "A Machine for Green Living: DIY, low-cost and low-tech, yet imaginative in layout, design details and materials as well as being innovative in building and environmental technologies".
The 'Display' category was won by RSAA and Büro Ziyu Zhuang for their four-metre high Cloud Maze installation in Shanghai, China, which was praised for balancing the two narratives of a translucent maze and "the echoes of the mountains in an immersive experience".
And finally, Mecanoo Architecten and their LocHal Library project in Tilburg, the Netherlands, won in the 'Creative Re-Use' category, with the library having already picked up an award at the WAF. Designed as new urban living room in a former locomotive shed, the project was described by the judges as a "true public space" that had been "thoughtfully designed and yet not over-designed".
The World Interior of the Year will be named later tonight.
