Herzog & de Meuron 'working on expansion' for Chelsea FC stadium

by Katie Buckley | 05 Jan 2015

Swiss-based architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron is working on plans to increase the capacity of Chelsea Football Club’s Stamford Bridge ground in west London in partnership with London-based practice Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands.

The club wants to expand from the current 41,837 seats, to a 60,000 seat capacity, following the recommendations of a feasibility study undertaken in June 2014. At the time, the club said: “The study will assess the feasibility of an expansion of the stadium within the existing historic site boundaries, to enlarge its capacity, enhance its facilities and improve the movement of people and vehicles on match and non-match days.”

Several Premier League clubs have been considering expand their grounds in recent months. Both Liverpool FC and Tottenham Hotspur have plans in place for major expansions which will be taking place soon.

Chelsea has previously assessed other larger sites for relocation, including two regeneration schemes at Battersea Power Station and Earls Court.

Herzog & de Meuron has worked on a number of large sports projects, including the Bird’s Nest Stadium for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and the 75,000 seat Allianz Arena in Germany, which is home to Bayern Munich.
