Edinburgh's new-look King's Theatre unveiled after £2.6m revamp

City of Edinburgh Council (CEC) has unveiled the new-look King's Theatre following the completion of an initial £2.6m refurbishment of the historic cultural venue.

Historic Scotland and The Nancie Massey Trust funded the project in conjunction with the local authority, with work starting in September 2011 and including "essential" repairs.

Structural engineers Will Rudd; mechanical and electrical engineers Rybka; and architects Smith Scott Mullan Associates - all based in Edinburgh - were involved with the project.

A redecoration of the main foyer and stairs; a new box office; and improved facilities aimed at wheelchair users are also among the improvements undertaken as part of the scheme.

Essex-based theatre seating specialist Kirwin and Simpson made and installed new seating for the Stalls and Dress Circles - replicas of the 'Lazarus' style popular during the 1900s.

CEC culture and leisure convener Richard Lewis said: "This essential investment will ensure that audiences of all ages can continue to enjoy shows at the King's in comfort for many more years to come."

Festival City Theatres Trust chief executive Duncan Hendry added: "The first stage of the restoration project has made significant improvements to the front of house areas and the auditorium."
