Architects to design Porto Alegre project
A new EUR198m (£174m) scheme to revamp the disused Cais Mauá dock area of Porto Alegre, Brazil, is to be designed by b720 Fermín Vázquez Arquitectos alongside Jaime Lerner Arquitetos Associades.
Plans for the creation of the major new 2.5km (1.6-mile) stretch of waterfront will include a business and leisure zone for one of the 2014 FIFA World Cup venues. A hotel; a conference centre; and office space will be built in the disused quays area, while a retail development and the restoration of early 20th century warehouses are also proposed.
Rio Grande do Sul's government has appointed the Porto Cais Mauá do Brasil consortium to deliver the project, which is headed by Spain-based Landside. A b720 spokesperson said: "The transformation of Porto Alegre's waterfront is aimed at re-establishing a direct, human relationship with the Guaíba River, restoring the area's historical and cultural heritage, and creating a new icon for the city."
