Worthing pool project moves forward
Plans to build a new swimming pool in Worthing's Aquarena in West Sussex have taken a step forward after the local authority confirmed the sale of 1.13 hectares (2.8 acres) of land to a housing developer.
A resolution to grant planning permission for the development of land at Sea Place and Eirene Road, which was issued in December 2007, was approved by Worthing Borough Council (WBC) on 5 February after a Section 106 agreement was signed with Kier Homes. The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has now launched a design competition for the new swimming pool, with expressions of interests due to be submitted before the 14 March deadline.
WBC cabinet member for resources, Paul Yallop, said: "This is a big vote of confidence for Worthing, especially when so many big developments are being shelved because of the recession. This money is a vital contribution towards building our much-needed swimming pool to replace the aged Aquarena." The scheme is also set to include a housing development, a new health centre, and the relocation of an existing yacht club.
