//3877 compose approachable, music-themed boxing gym in Washington, D.C.

The layering of the rope wall creates a unique separation of spaces while allowing for sights and sounds to transfer between areas, increasing the overall sense of community.
– David Shove-Brown

The team at unusually named studio //3877 has created a boxing gym in Washington, D.C., based on the concept of 'Night Club Meets Fight Club'.

In addition to requesting the integration of musically themed elements into the design, the brief outlined that Boombox Boxing Club should be "approachable, motivational and an active asset in forging a focussed community."

A large glazed frontage provides views into the gym from outside, contributing to a sense of approachability and helping to create a bright reception area into which visitors are welcomed.

Here, there is a check-in booth, a wall of storage lockers and retail space – and an industrial-style garage door can be opened when the weather permits for a more al fresco feel to workouts.

The studio's ring can be seen from outside, giving passersby views of any sparring and training that is taking place, with rope walls helping to partition the space but still allowing sightlines through it.

David Shove-Brown, principal and co-founder at //3877, said: "The layering of the rope wall, giving views to the display ring, is my favourite feature. It creates a unique separation of spaces while allowing for sights and sounds to transfer between areas, increasing the overall sense of community."

Hip-hop motifs on the walls are part of the gym's black and white palette, with the music selection "chosen to inspire and motivate."

The bright, welcoming front part of the facility gives way to a darker studio with nightclub-like lighting and music intended to foster a more motivational atmosphere for training classes.

A variety of other workout, weights and resistance training stations are located throughout the gym.
