Studio Sofield bring classic design and luxury amenities to New York residences
– William Sofield
Studio Sofield have designed a house and tower residential pairing in New York's prestigious Upper East Side, blending classical and contemporary architecture that is drawn through into a generous offering of luxury amenities.
Beckford House & Tower comprises two adjacent and complementary buildings with a combined 104 residences that range in price from $2m (€1.8m, £1.5m) to over $25m (€23m, £19m).
The buildings are designed in the grand, pre-war tradition of the Upper East Side, with materials including Indiana Limestone, Brynne brownstone and grey brick.
Studio Sofield has aimed to bring a "blend of formality and elegant luxury" to the residences, with ornate foyers, dining rooms, large living rooms and formal galleries.
William Sofield, founder and principal of Studio Sofield, said: "My intention was to create some of the most legendarily gracious apartments, anywhere in Manhattan, with custom millwork, proper dining rooms and intricate detailing."
Ceiling heights range from 9-13ft (3-4m) and finishes include geometric cornicing, herringbone-laid oak flooring and Statuary marble.
The smaller of the two buildings, Beckford House contains 32 residences across 21 floors, with a choice of two- to five-bedroom homes, three full-floor penthouses and a duplex.
Among its architectural features are terraces and Juliet balconies, a classical masonry façade and intricate ironwork with decorative brick and stone quoining.
Inside, there is an ornate lobby, a reception room and private lounge with an adjoining dining room and a bar with a fireplace.
Residents can also make use of a fitness centre and yoga studio, as well as a 22nd-floor roof terrace with greenery, seating and an outdoor kitchen.
The adjacent 31-floor Beckford Tower contains 72 residences, which comprise one- to six-bedroom homes and three full-floor penthouses with private terraces.
The tower is designed with Brynne Brownstone, Indiana Limestone, custom-designed wrought ironwork and classical awnings.
A double-height vestibule with a skylight welcomes people into the building and through into a vaulted lobby with a vintage chandelier.
Recreational amenities include a grand reception room and library, a piano bar and lounge and a games room.
There are over 3,000sq ft (280sq m) of wellness amenities, including a double-height basketball half-court, a fitness centre, yoga and training studios and a 65ft (20m) indoor swimming pool with a hot tub, a relaxation area, a steam room and changing rooms.
The pool area is designed in the Art Deco style and has a glass ceiling, ornate metal detailing, potted palms and a custom glass mosaic wall mural.
The tower also houses a children's playroom and a party room with a catering kitchen.
Sofield said: "The private facilities and communal spaces within the tower are unabashedly amongst the most luxurious in the city."
Construction of Beckford House & Tower is already underway, with Beckford expected to be complete in Q2 2020 and Beckford Tower in Q2 2021.
