MANICA retool Raiders' stadium design as NFL franchise eyes Las Vegas move

Manica Architecture have revisited their stadium design for National Football League (NFL) franchise Oakland Raiders, with the proposed location shifting from California to Nevada.

The studio originally designed the 65,000 capacity stadium to be a joint home for the Raiders and fellow NFL side the San Diego Chargers as part of a joint bid which would have seen them both relocate to Los Angeles. That move was rejected by the NFL, who instead allowed a third franchise – the St Louis Rams – to move to the city.

Raiders owner Mark Davis has persevered with the plans to relocate, and Manica have now tweaked their design to fit a location on the Las Vegas Strip. While the facade and size of the original Los Angeles design remain, a huge domed glass roof will be added.

Vegas developer Sheldon Adelson – whose company Las Vegas Sands owns casinos, convention centres and hotels in Vegas – is interested in part-funding the US$1.9bn (£1.5bn, €1.7bn) proposal.

He has committed to investing US$650m (£496.8m, €583m) of his personal wealth into the venture. Adelson and Davies want the country to help fun a further US$750m (£573.3m, €672.7m) over 30 years by adding 0.88 percentage points to the existing 12 per cent county hotel room tax. The Raiders would invest the final US$500m (£382.2m, €448.5m) needed to build the stadium.

The Southern Nevada Tourism Infrastructure Committee is currently considering the plan.

The benefits for the City of Las Vegas, according to Davis and Adelson, include US$100m (£76.4m, €89.7m) in annual exposure value from the presence of the Raiders, increased tourism and the opportunity to attract big sporting fixtures to the region.

In an interview with the Las Vegas Review-Journal, which his company owns, Adelson said: “Can you imagine what kind of reaction there’d be if we had Manchester United playing Real Madrid in Las Vegas? It would be huge. And the fans won’t come in for one day, they’ll come in for at least three.”

In response to questions about the tax hike proposal – which some have said Adelson stands to benefit from due to his ownership of the local Venetian Resort Hotel Casino – the billionaire said the extra tax money would go to a stadium authority owned by the government, rather than himself. “I don’t need the money that’s going to be made in the stadium,” he stated.

Manica have also designed a proposed new San Diego stadium for the Chargers franchise as it looks to develop a new stadium itself. Meanwhile, the St Louis Rams have been renamed the Los Angeles Rams and will move into an new home in LA’s Inglewood designed by architects HKS.
