A landmark reborn: Biltmore Hotel reveals extensive renovations

by Andrew Manns | 30 Jan 2019

The picturesque Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables, Miami – home to the largest swimming pool on the US eastern seaboard – has recently completed a US$30m (€26.2m, £22.3m) refurbishment.

Featuring 271 renovated rooms and suites as well as a transformed lounge and common areas, the Biltmore also includes a 12,000 sq ft (11,148 sq m) spa centre with a built-in Himalayan salt sauna and steam room.

Debatably the most prominent example of the Mediterranean Revival architectural style in North America, the Biltmore was originally designed in 1926 by American architecture firm Schultze and Weaver.

The resort’s recent refurbishment was carried out by D'Shakil Designs and Studio 5 Design + Architecture, while the 18-hole golf course – planned by Donald Ross in 1925 – was revamped by Brian Silva.

In addition to its expansive pool and 10,000 sq ft fitness space, the Biltmore also offers a selection of on-site dining options, including Fontana, an Italian restaurant; Cascade, a poolside brasserie; 19th Hole, a golf-themed bar and grill, and the Five Diamond-winning Palme d’Or.

Frequently used as a filming location in Hollywood blockbusters, the hotel was designated a National Historic Landmark by the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.
