Towodesign create golden 'bird’s nest' health café in Shanghai

by Andrew Manns | 24 May 2019

Chinese studio Towodesign have completed work on Dr. Bravura – a health-centric eatery in Shanghai that specialises in a unique delicacy: bird's nests.

The 119 sq m space, which the architects say is based on the concept of "Research and Development for Health" is furnished with gold-painted stands, shelves, and lighting fixtures, as well as glass displays which create the ambience of an art gallery.

Each hexagonal display – shaped to simulate the structure of chemical formulae – houses a bird's nest, which customers can purchase and consume in the café's lounge.

Bird's nests, one of the most expensive and sought-after foods in the world, are sourced from limestone caves in Indonesia and are reputed to have wide-ranging health benefits.

Other dining options include a variety of dishes with traditional ingredients, all of which – according to the architects – are "grounded in nutrition science".

Dr. Bravura is one of 85 entries in the café category for this year's Restaurant and Bar Design Awards.

The shortlist is scheduled to be announced on 18 June.
