Glass-floored, overwater treatment rooms let guests watch the fish as they relax at Duniye Spa at Hurawalhi Maldives
Spa consultancy and management company Duniye Spas will operate the spa the the upcoming Hurawalhi Resort in the Maldives, an eco-conscious resort set to open 1 November.
The 600sq m (6,458sq ft) spa will feature five overwater treatment rooms with outdoor baths and glass floors – designed for clients to watch fish and ocean creatures as they have a treatment, said Renate Hermes, group spa director for Duniye Spas.
Treatment rooms have “a spectacular view over the ocean – you enjoy a bath experience sitting in your tub while floating above the ocean,” said Hermes.
A Tree Top Yoga and Tranquility Lounge overlooks a lagoon and beaches, and fits with Duniye’s focus on creating a connection with self, body and nature.
The resort itself, designed by New York architect Yuji Yamazaki, features a contemporary collection of 90 villas.
Sixty per cent of the resort will be powered by solar energy, and Yamazaki has used 4,243sq m of solar panels – equivalent to 26 volleyball courts – in the design.
Other green initiatives include access to a local water bottling plant to reduce plastic consumption; food and water recycling facilities; a collection of greenhouses, fertilised by food waste, to produce organic produce for guests; a desalination system that filters sea-water and turns it into clean water for drinking and cooking, and supplies rainfall showers in the resort’s villas; and an in-house marine biologist.
The centrepiece of the Hurawalhi Island Resort will be an underwater restaurant, billed as the world's largest, created by marine design specialists M.J. Murphy.
