Yansong, Ingels and Koolhaas in the running for Design Museum's annual architecture gong

Ma Yansong, Bjarke Ingels, Rem Koolhaas and Herzog and de Meuron are all in the running for the annual architecture prize awarded by London’s Design Museum.

The ninth edition of the museum’s Beazley Designs of the Year will celebrate the best creations over the past 12 months across six categories: Architecture, Digital, Fashion, Graphics, Product and Transport.

Yansong and his studio MAD are nominated for the Harbin Opera House; Ingels and BIG have been shortlisted for the Via 57 West ‘courtscraper’ in New York; Koolhaas and OMA are tipped for their Prada Foundation in Milan and Herzog and de Meuron make the cut for their extension to London's Tate Modern art museum.

Other nominations include AOC for The Green – a community and fitness centre in Nunhead, UK – and Wayne Hemmingway for his redesign of Margate's Dreamland amusement park. Meanwhile, Mumbai's temporary mobile Design Museum Dharavi by artist Jorge Mañes Rubio is nominated in the Product category.

Sketches, models, physical pieces and photography for all nominations will be on display from 24 November 2016 to 19 February 2017 at the Design Museum’s forthcoming new home in Kensington. The museum’s board describes the exhibition as “a rare moment to experience a diverse selection of industries, objects and technologies in one place.”

Innovative nominees in other categories include a drinkable book, a coffee cup for astronauts, a flat-pack refugee shelter designed by the IKEA Foundation, and the album cover for David Bowie’s Blackstar.

A winner will be selected in each category and one overall winner will be announced on 26 January 2017. Previous winners have included the 2012 Olympic Torch and the Heydar Aliyev Centre by Zaha Hadid.
